Pool Maintenance FAQ's

How often should I have my water tested?

We recommend testing it once every week or two.

How often should I shock my pool?

We recommend shocking the pool once a week and after a large bather load.

How often should I change the sand in my filter?

Our recommendation is to change it every four to five years.

How long should I run my filter and when?

We suggest running the filter during daylight hours, about eight to ten hours every day.

How often do I vacuum my pool?

Vacuuming the pool twice a week should be adequate but may require more frequent vacuuming if you have large bather loads or bad weather.

Why does water come out of my backwash hose when it is in filter mode?

In our experience, this could indicate that the spider gasket could be twisted or worn.

How long after I shock my pool can people go in it?

We recommend waiting the following time based on the different types of shock: Sodium-based: 15-30 minutes Liquid-based: 2-3 hours Calcium-based: 30 minutes-1 hour Lithium-based: 2-3 hours

What should the pressure reading be on my filter?

The sand filter should read 10-12 PSI, anything below 20 PSI is acceptable. The DE filter should read 12-15 PSI, should not go below 8 PSI.

When should I backwash my filter?

We recommend that the sand filter should be backwashed when pressure reaches 20 PSI. DE filter should be backwashed when pressure reaches 20 PSI or every 3 weeks.

How much DE do I add for my filter?

24 SQ FT – 3 LBS 36 SQ FT – 4 ½ LBS 48 SQ FT – 6 LBS 60 SQ FT – 7 ½ LBS 72 SQ FT – 9 LBS

How many chlorine tabs do I use?

Above ground pool – 1 to 2 tabs InGround pool – 3 to 4 tabs if using a floater

How often do I use an algaecide?

We suggest using it weekly.

Hot Tub FAQ's

Are hot tubs easy to clean or maintain?

Yes, by following the simple manufacturer’s water and filter maintenance guidelines, very little time is needed to maintain your hot tub. Our knowledgeable chemical department here at Central Jersey Pools can provide you with information and products.

Does a hot tub need to be filled and drained each time it is used?

Fortunately, no. Properly maintained, many people change the water in their hot tub every three to six months, depending on the number of bathers, frequency of use, type of sanitizing system, etc.

Hydrotherapy is a word associated with hot tubs – what does this mean?

Hydrotherapy is a treatment for relaxation with the combination of heat, massage and buoyancy. Soothing properties of warm water are known in helping to alleviate the symptoms of aching muscles and arthritis. The jet system in the hot tub provides a massaging motion that targets the muscle groups in the body. The buoyancy (floating) created in the water reduces the pressure of the body weight on any strained muscles and joints, helping them heal quickly.

How will I get warranty service for my new hot tub?

When your hot tub is delivered always complete the warranty registration card. If your hot tub requires warranty service, call our Central Jersey Pools service department. Although our spas are designed to far exceed their warranty, it is our goal to ensure you receive prompt quality service during the warranty period and beyond.

What are the permit and electrical requirements for a hot tub?

You must contact your town’s building/construction department to obtain the specifics regarding this. In most cases though, you do need a permit for a hot tub which uses more than 24 inches of water and has electric installed. When installed, the electrical wiring of the hot tub must meet all applicable state and local codes. That’s why it is important to use a licensed electrician which is available right here at Central Jersey Pools.

Where should I put my hot tub?

It’s a good idea to try out different locations before deciding on the spot. Consider things like the view you would like to see, privacy, trees, etc. It’s a good idea to keep it close to the house if you plan on using it in the winter, which is one of the best times of the year! Wherever you decide, make sure you measure it in advance to make sure it will FIT.

Is there an easier way to remove my spa cover?

Yes, there are cover removal devices which allows one person to remove the cover with ease and without back strain. They come in a variety of models, are lightweight and durable, and are easy to install. We carry a variety of these here at Central Jersey Pools.

Above Ground FAQ's

How do I decide what size above ground pool to select?

• Measure your entire yard - its width and how deep it is from the house to the far edge. • Sketch this on a piece of paper to scale (1/2" per foot, or whatever works for you). • Next, take any permanent features on the yard (shed, driveway if applicable, etc.) and sketch those in to see what available space you have. • Create cut-outs to represent different pool sizes and place these various cut-outs on your sketch. • Remember to factor in things like decking, landscaping and other features when you’re looking at how the pool will fit in your backyard. • Install the filtration system less than 18 feet from the pool, close to a power outlet. The shorter the distance between the pump and power outlet, the easier the structure will be to install.

Do I need to have my above ground pool installed by a professional?

Pool installation is a task often best handled by the experts. While most above ground pools are designed to be easy and fast to install, a professional installation crew can provide you with assurances regarding getting the job done right the first time. However, spring and summer are the most hectic time for pool installers, so it’s very important to set a schedule and book a crew early if you want to make the most of your pool for the entire season. Can I finance the cost of the pool?

We do offer financing options and Central Jersey Pools can assist you with the application process. A down payment is required on all financed sales in the amount of the sales tax.

Is there much maintenance with a swimming pool?

Swimming pools are simple to maintain when it is done on a regular basis. Keeping your chlorine (or salt or Baquacil) levels and Ph levels at the proper range prevents a multitude of issues. Basic maintenance on a regular basis is easy and preventative. Our knowledgeable chemical staff can provide you with information and products. Central Jersey Pools also provides services such as pool openings, pool cleaning and pool closings.

How long does an above ground pool last?

Pools will normally last between 5-15 yrs. It depends on the quality of the pool and the type of dirt the pool is sitting on.

What can I do to make my pool last longer?

First of all, don't let a leaky liner stay in your pool because the water will eat the wall away - either patch it or change it. Second, every time you change the liner examine the inside wall of your pool. If you see any rust, sand it away and spray on some corrosion eliminator. Also, don't sit on or jump off the pool rails.

Do I need a permit for an above ground pool? Are there any regulations regarding above ground pools?

Contact your city or municipality for applicable laws and regulations governing above ground pools – these may include the following: • A building permit (not required in all areas, but you should always check) • Safety standards (in certain regions) • Utilities (electricity, laws governing when pools can be filled and drained, etc.) • Laws regarding fencing and boundaries around a yard with a pool • Boundaries of your property

Do I need a safety barrier around my above ground swimming pool?

Yes. You can place a safety barrier around the stairs or construct a small fence around the top perimeter of the pool. Your local building department can provide you with specific requirements.
