Bromine vs. Chlorine: Which Is Better for Hot Tubs?

Bromine Hot Tub Maintenance Guide | Central Jersey Pools

Bromine Hot Tub Maintenance Made Simple

Want an easy and effective way to keep your spa water fresh? Bromine is one of the best choices for hot tubs. At Central Jersey Pools, we often recommend bromine instead of chlorine because it holds up better in hot water, stays active longer, and is gentler on the skin. To get the most from it, you’ll need to know how to add bromine, balance your water, and maintain your spa regularly.

Here’s everything you need to know about caring for a hot tub with bromine.

Bromine vs. Chlorine: Which Is Better for Hot Tubs?

Both bromine and chlorine sanitize your hot tub, but they work in different ways.

Chlorine in Hot Tubs

Chlorine oxidizes bacteria and debris, but once it reacts, it forms chloramines. These not only lower chlorine’s effectiveness but also cause the strong “pool smell” many spa owner’s dislike. Chlorine levels should stay between 1–3 ppm. Since UV light breaks down chlorine quickly, it usually requires a stabilizer (CYA), though too much stabilizer can reduce its power.

Bromine in Hot Tubs

Bromine, on the other hand, ionizes contaminants and continues working even after it reacts, which makes it last longer than chlorine. It’s more stable in warm water, less affected by pH swings, and doesn’t carry the same strong odor. Bromine is ideal for spas, especially for those with sensitive skin. Just remember, it can degrade in sunlight, so always keep your hot tub covered when not in use.

How to Add Bromine to Your Spa

Bromine comes in two forms:

  • Bromine Tablets: Dissolve slowly and work best in a floating dispenser. Most spas need 3–5 tablets weekly, but you can adjust the floater for consistent results.
  • Bromine Granules: Dissolve quickly and are perfect for boosting bromine levels on short notice.

If your spa has fresh water, start with sodium bromide (a bromide booster). Then add a non-chlorine shock to activate it into usable bromine sanitizer. After that, maintain levels with bromine tablets in a floater.

Other Essential Hot Tub Chemicals

Bromine is only one part of keeping spa water balanced. At Central Jersey Pools, we recommend also keeping these products on hand:

  • Alkalinity Increaser: Helps keep pH levels stable.
  • pH Up/Down: Balances water to prevent cloudiness, scale, and skin irritation.
  • Calcium Hardness Increaser: Protects hot tub surfaces and equipment.
  • Non-Chlorine Shock (Oxidizer): Refreshes bromine and clears out contaminants.

Bromine Shock Treatments

For the cleanest water, use a non-chlorine shock regularly in your bromine spa. It reactivates bromine already in the water while oxidizing contaminants, leaving your hot tub fresh, clear, and safe to enjoy.
