A Saltwater Pool has Chlorine In It

Many people mistakenly believe that the water in saltwater pools has no chlorine in it. While it may seem like a paradox, a saltwater pool water actually has chlorine in it. It’s just that the chlorine is made by the salt system rather than directly added to the water as chlorine. 

Salt can do a bit of disinfecting on its own, but it’s not powerful enough to sanitize a pool full of water. A salt chlorine generator uses electrolysis to convert salt into chlorine. That chlorine is then transferred to the water to sanitize it. So a saltwater pool is not a chlorine-free pool. 

The Water Feels Softer

You might think that all water basically feels the same. That said, many people who have taken a dip in a saltwater pool describe the water as feeling softer—even silky. What’s the reason for the difference? Traditional chlorine tablets contain other ingredients that aren’t chlorine. These extras add to the total dissolved solids (TDS) in the pool water. With a salt system making its own chlorine, you don’t have all of these extra additives in the water. As such, the water in a saltwater pool tends to feel softer.

In addition, the water in saltwater pools tends to be gentler on eyes, skin, and bathing suits. Without all of the extra additives in the water, swimmers usually find that the water is gentler on them overall. In addition, the chlorine levels in a saltwater pool tend to be lower than in a traditional pool. 

The Water Doesn’t Taste Like the Ocean

If you’ve ever been for a swim in the ocean, you know the distinctive briny taste of the water. You may assume that the water in a saltwater pool will have a similar taste. The truth is that saltwater pools have far less salt in the water than what is in ocean water. 

In fact, a saltwater pool has only about 1/10 the amount of salt that the ocean has. Our bodies usually don’t start tasting saltiness until salt levels are above 3500 parts per million (ppm). A well maintained saltwater pool has salt levels at around 3000 ppm.
