What is the average size of a residential swimming pool?

Trying to decide on the best size for a backyard pool can be a challenge. You don’t want your pool to be too small and feel cramped. But you also don’t want it to be too large, going unused and taking unnecessary space away from your yard. So, what is the average size of a residential swimming pool? Most backyard pools are between 10 to 20 feet wide by 20 to 40 feet long and 6 to 8 feet deep. Check out these swimming pool options and how to determine the best size pool for you.

Residential Swimming Pool Options

Inground Pools

At Central Jersey Pools we carry a large selection of inground fiberglass pools in a variety of shapes, sizes, and features. Choose from pools as small as the Thursday Pools® Sea Turtle pool, which is 9.5′ x 19.5′ and 4’6 deep, or Latham®’s Aruba pool sized at 11′ x 22′. If you are interested in a large pool, we carry those too! Check out the aptly named Goliath by Thursday Pools which is a full 16′ x 41′ and 6’8″ deep. Similarly, we carry several Latham Pools in varying large shapes and styles that measure 16’ by 40’ such as the Caribbean, Genesis, and Monaco.

In addition to fiberglass pools, we also build custom vinyl liner pools. Building a custom pool allows you to have full control over the size and shape. Our team at Central Jersey Pools can help your design and build the perfect pool for your family and yard.

Above Ground Pools

You can also choose from an excellent selection of the finest above ground pools on the market. Get elegance, strength, and durability with our above ground pools. Choose from pools as small as 8 feet round all the way up 41’ x 21’, and everything in between!

What Size Swimming Pool is Best for Me?

Available Space

To choose the best-sized residential swimming pool for you, there are several factors to consider. The first is the available space in your backyard. In most instances, it is recommended your pool takes up no more than 25% of your backyard. This does not include the surrounding deck, equipment, storage, and pool seating areas.

User Load

On average, how many people will be using your pool? This makes a big difference in how to size your pool. For obvious reasons, a family with 1-2 people requires less pool space than a family of 8. Additionally, consider how often you plan to throw a pool party or have friends over to swim.

Primary Pool Use

How do you plan to use your pool? If your primary use is to swim laps for exercise, your pool will have different size requirements than a pool for kids to splash in or a pool primarily used for relaxation.
